Edgar Edson Mwakabela

Prominent social-media activist known online as Sativa, and a vocal critic of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. On 23 June 2024 he was abducted by plainclothes operatives on a highway in Dar es Salaam, held overnight at a local police station, then blindfolded, handcuffed and transported more than 1,000 km across the country. His captors interrogated him about who was facilitating his online activism and his involvement in mobilizing local trader boycotts, and severely beat him with sticks and machetes. Four days later, on 27 June 2024, they dragged him into the remote Katavi National Park, shot him in the head and left him for dead.
